In the early 2000’s I was living in Mayville, WI doing my best to dodge the police. Not because I was the leader of a criminal enterprise – Mayville’s population was around 5,000 people, so that would be impossible – but because I was a convicted felon (for selling marijuana) without a driver’s license.

There are almost 493,100 correctional officers employed in jails, institutions and prisons across the country. The largest employer of correctional officers is the state government with 236,890 officers. City, county and other municipal governments employ about 157,910 officers, and the federal government employs 16,250 officers.
